Farmer-to-Farmer Mentoring Program

Need an experienced farmer to guide your farm or help you set up a new organic enterprise? Want to share your experience with a beginning farmer and encourage sustainable, organic production? Apply now to participate in the 2021 MOSES Farmer-to-Farmer Mentoring Program. Mentorships with experienced organic farmers are available in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The program runs from January 2021 to February 2022 and includes admission to the MOSES Organic Farming Conference in both years. Cost to be mentored is $350; scholarships are available. The application deadline is Oct. 31, 2020.

2021 Conference

MOSES is collaborating with several partner organizations to create a combined virtual conference scheduled for Feb. 22-27, 2021. This united conference gives farmers, researchers, ag professionals, and advocates the chance to connect and join in workshops and roundtables to advance farming skills and move the needle on farming and food system change. Watch for conference details in the November Organic Link enews.

In the meantime, don't miss the chance to show off your farm through a speed presentation:

Farmer Speed Presentations

One aspect of the conference we all appreciate is the chance to share ideas over lunch or between workshops. A lot of good comes from building on each other's tips and successes.

To encourage that same kind of sharing in a virtual conference format, we'll have a spot for speed presentations from our farmer community. Through a 4-minute video, you can share an insightful tip you've developed to make a farm chore easier, a cool tool you're using or hack you've created, or simply provide a virtual tour of your farm. Start shooting! Farmer speed presentations must be submitted by Oct. 31. See details here.

Call for Organic Research Presentations

The 2021 virtual conference provides the opportunity to change up how we showcase the organic research being done by graduate students, farmers, and university researchers. Instead of the traditional poster gallery, we're giving these researchers the chance to share a 4-minute recording about their study and it's implications for organic farming. We'll also post PDFs of the research posters, when available. And, we'll provide discussion space so conference participants can engage with research presenters about their topics.

See the Organic Research Forum webpage for details about this virtual forum and proposal guidelines.

Peer-Led Mental Health Group for Farmers

Our new "Growing Wellness" group met for the first time last month. In the skills presentation, Lori Cox of Roots Return Heritage Farm in Minnesota talked about “Empowered Decision-Making” to help farmers set informed goals. The presentation has been posted to YouTube and featured on the MOSES Organic Farming Podcast.

Growing Wellness meets next on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. The skills presentation will feature Monica Kramer McConkey, a licensed counselor in rural Minnesota, talking about "Nurturing Protective Factors for Mental Health." Sign up here. The skills session will be followed by a group discussion that will not be recorded to allow participants to share more openly.

Learn more about Growing Wellness and how to join the listserv focused on farmer mental health.

Anti-Racism Farmer Groups

Many farmers in our network have expressed interest in working with MOSES on racial justice in food and farming. If you'd like to be part of farmer-led groups focused on anti-racism, please complete this survey. If you have questions about this work, please email MOSES Organic Specialist Chuck Anderas.

Beginning Farmer Program

MOSES has received a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to help new, intermediate, and more experienced beginning farmers find success in organic production. We will be working with partner organizations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois to hold one-day New Farmer U trainings over the next three years. Scholarships also will be available through the grant to help beginning farmers access our Farmer-to-Farmer Mentoring Program.

Signup for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 (CFAP 2) continues through Dec. 11, 2020. CFAP 2 provides eligible producers with direct financial assistance due to market disruptions and associated costs because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Farmers and ranchers who participated in the first round of CFAP may complete a new application for CFAP 2. The new round includes many more specialty crops. See an explanation of the program in this 2-minute video.

Through the CFAP Call Center (877-508-8364), you can have a USDA staff member provide one-on-one support with the CFAP application process from start to finish.

Farmer, Rancher Grants

NCR-SARE’s Farmer Rancher Grant Program supports farmers and ranchers who want to explore sustainable solutions to problems through on-farm research, demonstration, and education projects. NCR-SARE expects to fund about 50 projects in the 12-state North Central region worth a total of $720,000. Watch the grant-writing webinar to get pointers on writing a strong proposal for the innovative idea you'd like to try to further sustainable farming. Applications are due by Dec. 3, 2020.

Livestock Grants

Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) is accepting grant applications for livestock and poultry farmers who want to expand animal welfare, build capacity, or improve pasture for their animals. Grants of up to $2,500 are available for projects such as building mobile housing, constructing fences, and laying water lines on pasture. Applications for FACT's Fund-a-Farmer grants are due by Dec. 1, 2020.

Organic Farming Business Management

The University of Minnesota in partnership with state-level farm business management (FBM) programs is looking for organic farmers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota to participate in FBM training and the Organic Benchmarking Project. Organic producers of dairy, alfalfa, corn grain, corn silage, hay/haylage, soybeans, or wheat can receive reduced tuition for FBM now through 2022. Each participating farm will receive individualized benchmark reports, financial analysis, and cash flow reports while working with their FBM instructor to enhance management and financial capacity on their organic farm. See more details and contact information here.
