Save the Date
MOSES hosts the bi-annual Women in Sustainable Ag Conference this fall for women involved in farming, food system work, and ag policy. The event will take place Oct. 17-19 at the InterContinental St. Paul Riverfront. Submit workshop proposals by May 17, 2019. Registration will open Aug. 1.
The USDA is accepting nominations for five open seats on the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), the 15-member board which makes recommendations on the production, handling, and processing of USDA certified organic products. Each member serves a five-year term and represents specific sectors of the organic community. Current openings include one seat each for an environmental protection and resource conservation representative, organic farmer, and organic retailer, and two seats for organic handlers. Nominations are due by May 17, 2019.
The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) recently launched a toll-free helpline for farmers seeking support related to grazing livestock. Farmers and ranchers can call 1-888-664-7293 (1-888-MNGRAZE) or submit questions online. LSP can provide advice and resources regarding managed rotational grazing, cover crop grazing, stockpile grazing, winter feeding and pasture rental rates, among other topics.
Practical Farmers of Iowa is producing a series of videos on organic weed management featuring farmers who grow organic corn and soybeans. Watch the first episode, Seedbed Preparation and Planting, on YouTube.

The Midwest Organic Pork Conference has posted audio recordings from the inaugural event. Topics include organic certification, beginning and advanced pork production, pasturing, and more.
Food Safety FSMA Podcast
Wisconsin Farmers Union has released the Farmers Union Produce Safety Podcast, hosted by the late Chris Blanchard of the Farmer to Farmer Podcast, focused on produce safety requirements and best practices. Each episode covers different topics and ranges from 5-20 minutes in length. The podcast is designed to help growers comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule.
Conservation Trainings for Women Farmers
Wisconsin Farmers Union and Pheasants Forever will host Women Caring for the Land workshops this summer for women who farm to see on-farm conservation practices and network with other women farmers in their region. Workshops will be offered July 8 at Pape Family Pastures in Peshtigo, July 10 at Perennial Farms in Waldo, July 15 at EB Ranch in Ridgeland, July 16 at North Wind Organic Farm in Bayfield, Aug. 8 at Fenn’s Folly in Ferryville, and, Sept. 19 local farms around Greenleaf.
Guide to On-Farm Food Service
Local food fans are flocking to on-farm dining experiences, from multi-course farm-to-table meals to family-friendly pizza nights. This movement opens up opportunities for farmers to launch dining experiences on their family farms and add an income stream. A new free publication, Come & Get It: What you need to know to serve food on your farm, is a 120-page guide with case studies of nine successful farm businesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The project was spearheaded by Renewing the Countryside.
Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) is offering two webinars for farmers this month—one on grazing livestock by solar installations and another on managing summer interns.
Native Food Sovereignty Programs
Americorps has opportunities to work this summer with Native American tribes, including the Prairie Island Community in Minnesota and the Menomonee Tribe in Wisconsin, on healthy food access and economic development in food and agriculture.
