National Conference for Women in Ag Registration is open for the national Women in Sustainable Ag Conference happening Oct. 17-19 at the InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront hotel. MOSES is organizing the event this year, which will include a "Plate to Politics" track spearheaded by the Women, Food and Ag Network (WFAN) in place of the annual WFAN conference. Workshops, demos, and networking opportunities will support women in all aspects of sustainable agriculture, providing essential information on leadership skills, empowerment, and farm business success. |

MOSES Farmer-to-Farmer Mentoring Program Need an experienced farmer to guide your farm or help you set up a new enterprise? Want to share your experience with a beginning farmer and encourage sustainable, organic production? Apply now to participate in the 2020 MOSES Farmer-to-Farmer Mentoring Program. Cover Crop Resource
SARE has published a technical bulletin called Cover Crop Economics: Opportunities to Improve Your Bottom Line in Row Crops. Available for free both online and in print, it shares the latest research on the economics of planting cover crops. It takes a multi-year approach to analyze cover crops as a long-term investment rather than a simple annual budget analysis. The bulletin contains practical information for farmers like how cover crops affect yields over time and cover crop budgets for varied management scenarios. It also details the off-farm impacts of cover crops including water quality, infrastructure costs, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Four farmer profiles give examples of the practical effect of cover crops in real-life situations.

Fall NOSB Meeting The fall meeting of the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) will take place Oct. 23-25, 2019, in Pittsburgh, Penn. This is the semiannual meeting for the board to hear comments from the public about substances used in organic production. Written comments and requests for speaking time at the meeting must be received by Oct. 3. |

FEAST Local Foods Marketplace Farmers and food businesses with locally grown products may showcase at the 6th Annual FEAST Local Foods Marketplace Dec. 6 and 7 in Rochester, Minn. The event offers the opportunity to meet with buyers, network with peers, and introduce products to the general public. Organizers are looking for food businesses that utilize locally grown ingredients in their products and include features like gluten-free, grass-fed, and organic. Aug. 31 is the Early Bird deadline to apply for a booth. |

Odors as Pest Deterrent Organic farmers battling swede midge in brassicas will appreciate a new study from the University of Vermont that used plant odors to repel insect pests. The study is the first to show how the similarity of plant odors and phylogenetic relatedness can predict insect repellency. The researchers found that particular essential oils – garlic, spearmint, thyme, eucalyptus lemon, and cinnamon bark – were most effective at repelling the midge. |

Farm Aid Concert Farm Aid supports family farmers through grants to nonprofit organizations working to strengthen family farm agriculture and improve our nation’s food system. MOSES is proud to be a Farm Aid grant recipient. The annual Farm Aid concert to fund these grants takes place Sept. 21 at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin.
